General Orders
(Silver Star, Bronze Star, Air medal, Purple Heart)

Headquarters 80th Division General Orders are numbered sequentially and contain information regarding awards of the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Air Medal, and Purple Heart. From what I can gather, General Orders are sequentially numbered by year; so you may find, for example, GO 82 for November 17, 1944 and another GO 82 for March 23, 1945. These General Orders (in PDF format) are typically between one and 6 pages, though there are some that are 18 pages in length.

Note: The Bronze Star Medal was awarded to all soldiers who received the Combat Information Badge or the Combat Medical Badge:

There are two types of BSMs: one with a "V" (Valor) device and one without.
The following provides a brief explanation for those who received the BSM without the "V" device, after the 1947 Study by General George Marshall, US Army Chief of Staff.

The Bronze Star Medal (without the "V" device) may be awarded to each member of the Armed Forces of the United States who, after 6 December 1941, was cited in orders or awarded a certificate for exemplary conduct in ground combat against an armed enemy between 7 December 1941 and 2 September 1945. For this purpose, the US Army's Combat Infantryman Badge or Combat Medical Badge award is considered as a citation in orders.

Basically, if an Army Infantry soldier received the CIB or the CMB, he would also be eligible for the BSM (without the "V" device). Note that there were no General Orders for soldiers who received this recognition.

106th Evacuation Hospital HQ - General Orders 1944-1945

Thanks to Roberta Russo, Historian for 35th Infantry Division / 134th Infantry Regiment (www.coulthart.com/134), these are the 1944 & 1945 General Orders issued at the 106th Evacuation Hospital. The 106th was located in France, Germany and Austria throughout the course of the war. A few of these General Orders deal with administrative issues (e.g. changes of command) - but most are Purple Heart awards to individual soldiers treated at the hospital. They list name, serial number, rank, unit, country and date wounded.

While Roberta Russo focuses on the 35th Infantry Division, many of the Purple Heart awards are for men from units other than the 35th ID. She has graciously shared these GOs with others. I've taken the liberty to search and list those men who were with the 80th Division.
